Making the switch to reusable items is a major step in reducing single-use plastics. Using your own reusable bottle or taking your own reusable bags when you shop is a great way to reduce single-use plastic usage. Single-use plastics that aren’t properly disposed of end up in streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans where they are not only unsightly, but they are harmful to wildlife. It takes over 450 years for a plastic bottle to degrade and 1000 years for a plastic bag. BUT they never fully decompose – they become microplastics.

What does it all mean?

Trash, especially plastics, can result in deadly consequences to our water supply.
- By properly disposing of trash you’re keeping it out of our streams, rivers, lakes, and even oceans. Plastics especially can have numerous harmful effects on wildlife and even human health.
- Plastic bottles and bags don’t ever fully degrade. Instead they break down into microplastics. These tiny particles, less than 5 mm long, end up in our waterways where they are consumed by wildlife and even humans. Microplastics can cause severe health issues in wildlife including punctured organs and fatal blockages of the intestines.
- Water pollution from litter often begins on land. Litter gets washed by rain directly into waterways or through storm drains where it continues to rivers and streams.
